Oklahoma Partnership for Expanded Learning is pleased to announce a rewarding recognition of being named National Afterschool Association's newest state affiliate! Becoming a state affiliate allows a partnership with the National AfterSchool Association who work on the behalf of children and youth during out-of-school time.
Ben Felder is an investigative reporter for The Oklahoman and interviewed Kids Club and the Oklahoma Partnership for Expanded Learning to discuss the impact of afterschool programs and the lack of access of programs throughout Oklahoma.
The Oklahoma Partnership for Expanded Learning (OPEL) released the 2017 state report on the status of expanded learning in Oklahoma. Our report includes data on the effects on our children and communities when no expanded learning program is available, such as increased juvenile crime and teenage pregnancy. However, the report also highlights positive and successful existing programs that are changing students' lives, making significant differences in their communities.

VISTA Afterschool and Meals
Oklahoma City, OK—Network Director Megan Stanek of the Oklahoma Partnership for Expanded Learning (OPEL) has been selected among 16 leaders nationwide in the field of afterschool and expanded learning to be named a White-Riley- Peterson Policy Fellow. The White-Riley- Peterson Policy Fellowship is made possible through a partnership between the Riley Institute at Furman University (Greenville, S.C.) and the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.
The new class of White-Riley- Peterson Policy Fellows brings the total number of program participants to 75 since the initiative was launched in 2012.
Through discussion of actual case studies led by policy change-makers, the Fellowship equips graduates with a real world understanding of the art and science of sound policy-making for afterschool and expanded learning. In the 10-month program, which begins in October, Fellows will study afterschool/expanded learning policy and develop and implement state-level policy projects in partnership with their Statewide Afterschool Networks and the national Afterschool Alliance.
The White-Riley- Peterson Policy Fellowship is named for William S. White, President and CEO of the C.S. Mott Foundation; Richard W. Riley, former South Carolina Governor and U.S. Secretary of Education under President Clinton; and Dr. Terry Peterson, National Board Chair with the Afterschool Alliance, Director, Afterschool and Community Learning Network, and senior fellow at the Riley Institute.
“The White-Riley- Peterson Policy Fellowship has matured into a potent force to help move afterschool and expanded learning policy forward across the country,” said Dr. Don Gordon, executive director of the Riley Institute.

In October 2015, Oklahoma was awarded a $225,000 grant from the C.S. Mott Foundation to create a statewide partnership focused on Out of School Time programs. The Oklahoma Partnership for Expanded Learning (OPEL) was created to support Out of School Time program to coordinate a unified vision to inform policy and quality afterschool initiatives.
